‘Why Every Human Should Leave the Planet’

A Brodeur Space Group Webinar with former NASA Astronaut Michael López-Alegría

“The fact that you are there is kind of mind-boggling. You feel that you need to pinch yourself… because it is such a rare experience, and no degree of education or preparation can get you ready for what it really looks like or feels like.” – Former NASA Astronaut Michael López-Alegría in The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution

Most of us experience our world at human scale…you see the walls of your cubicle…your neighbors in their yard…maybe a few miles to the horizon.

When astronauts like Michael López-Alegría see the Earth from orbit or the moon, it looks radically different – a swirl of transcendent blue-green beauty without borders, boundaries, enemies, or strangers. It is just home, in a sense that the rest of us struggle to understand.

López-Alegría will detail his experience in space and how it relates to the “Overview Effect,” in an exclusive Brodeur Space Group webinar called “Why Every Human Should Leave the Planet”Thursday, March 19, at noon EDT.

The term Overview Effect was coined by Brodeur Space Group co-founder Frank White and recently highlighted by NASA in its celebration of the 20th anniversary of the International Space Station. The sight of the Earth from space can trigger a fundamental shift in the observer’s identity, awareness, or worldview, according to White, who will co-host the webinar with  López-Alegría.

White has personally interviewed more than 40 astronauts (and counting). In his books, he has documented perceptual shifts both profound and subtle, all unique, yet with one thing in common: Most astronauts yearn to share the experience. Why? Because they believe it would be great if everyone experienced the Overview Effect: In a time of global turmoil, a fresh worldview might yield a better future for the Earth. But you generally have to leave the planet to gain this new perspective.

That’s what Michael López-Alegría did from 1995 to 2007. He has spent more time spacewalking than any American and has the country’s fourth-longest spaceflight (215 days aboard the International Space Station).
